From Great Idea to Garage Full of Boxes: Why Inventors Should Validate Before They Build
Before You Spend $250,000 Building Your Idea, Ask This Question
Having a great idea is exciting.
You see a problem. You can picture the solution. And eventually, you reach the point where you think: I need someone to help me build this.
So, you do what seems logical.
You talk to economic development organizations. You find engineers. You hire designers and consultants. You start creating prototypes.
And before you know it, you can have tens—or even hundreds—of thousands of dollars invested in a product without answering one of the most important questions:
Is this actually the product customers want?
That lesson is personal for me.
My Parents Tried to Do It the Right Way
My parents developed an idea for a sorting gate for the agricultural industry.
They weren't experienced product developers. They were people who understood their industry, recognized a problem, and believed there was a better way to solve it.
And they knew enough to know they needed help.
So they sought guidance from local economic development organizations and professionals. They wanted to approach the opportunity intelligently. The problem was that they didn't know who they needed to talk to—or which questions needed to be answered before they started spending serious money.
They ultimately invested hundreds of thousands of dollars developing their product.
Engineers engineered.
Designers designed.
The product got built.
Then they started getting meaningful feedback from customers.
And they discovered something painful:
The market wanted something a little different.
Not necessarily an entirely different solution. But different enough that it mattered.
Different features. Different priorities. A better fit for how customers would actually use the product.
So they went back through the design process.
More engineering. More development. More money.
By the time they had worked through those changes, much of the capital that could have been used to actually take the product to market and build distribution was gone.
Everyone Did Their Job. That Was Part of the Problem.
This is where I think there is an important lesson for inventors.
The engineers weren't necessarily doing anything wrong. They were hired to engineer a product.
The designers were hired to design it.
Other professionals were providing the services they knew how to provide.
But who was responsible for stopping everything and asking:
Have we talked to enough potential customers to know we're solving the right problem?
Which features actually matter to those customers?
What would make someone buy this instead of continuing to do what they're doing today?
Who is going to buy it first?
How are we going to reach them?
What needs to be true before spending hundreds of thousands on development?
In my parents' case, nobody really challenged those assumptions.
There were plenty of people willing to help them spend money building the product. What they desperately needed was someone willing to challenge them before they spent it.
Product Development Isn't the Same as Market Validation
This is the trap I see many inventors fall into.
You have an idea, so the natural instinct is to make the idea real.
But a prototype isn't proof of demand.
A patent isn't proof of demand.
A beautiful design isn't proof of demand.
And a garage full of finished inventory definitely isn't proof of demand.
Before making a major investment in development, you need evidence that a specific group of customers has the problem you believe they have—and that your proposed solution addresses it in a way they actually value.
That doesn't mean your first idea has to be perfect.
In fact, customer conversations may tell you that it shouldn't be.
That's the point.
It's much cheaper to discover that on paper than after you've spent a ton of money.

In the video above, Bob talks about a version of this problem he has seen repeatedly with inventors.
Someone has an idea and hires a consultant, engineer, or product-development firm. Thousands of dollars later, they have a product.
Sometimes they even have hundreds of boxes of that product sitting in their garage.
Then they discover the hardest part:
Nobody has proven that customers actually want it.
By that point, the inventor has used much of the money, energy, and enthusiasm that could have gone toward testing the market, reaching customers, building distribution, and growing the business.
Change the Order
The takeaway isn't don't hire engineers.
And it certainly isn't don't build your idea.
It's about doing things in the right order.
Test your assumptions.
You may learn that your original idea is exactly what customers need.
You may learn that it needs one important change.
Or you may discover that the opportunity isn't where you thought it was at all.
Every one of those answers is valuable—especially if you learn it before writing the big checks.
Your Money Has More Than One Job
My parents' experience taught me something else that inventors don't always think about.
Getting a product built isn't the finish line.
Once you've developed it, you still have to introduce it to the market. You need customers. Distribution. Marketing. Sales. Relationships. Follow-up. Inventory. Operations.
If all of your available capital disappears during product development and redesign, you can end up with a much better product—but no resources left to get it into customers' hands.
That's a painful place to be.
My parents genuinely tried to approach their invention intelligently. They asked for help. They hired professionals. They invested in getting it right.
What they didn't have was someone at the beginning of the process asking the questions that might have saved them an enormous amount of time and money.
That's why I believe one of the most valuable things you can do for an inventor isn't immediately help them build their idea.
Sometimes it's to ask:
“Before we build this, how do we know this is what the customer actually wants?”
That question might not feel as exciting as seeing the first prototype come off the line.
But it could be worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.
